Nothing says the holiday season is here like Christmas Markets. These themed street markets generally happen during the four weeks of advent, originating in Germany during the Late Middle Ages. Since then, they've grown in popularity in Europe and around the world.

When it comes to Christmas Markets, the best of the best are inevitably found on their home turf in Germany. At the same time, there are many more amazing markets out there. And any one of them would make for an excellent festive holiday destination.

This is quite possibly the greatest Christmas Market in Budapest, and that's saying a lot since there are a few of them. Vorosmarty Square is in downtown Budapest, which is already an amazing travel destination all on its own. Rustic wooden stalls. Festive fairy lights. The scents of traditional food and drink wafting through the air. This is about as Christmas as it gets.

Toronto Christmas Market, Canada

As a country, Canada is synonymous with the very concept of a winter wonderland. It gets snowy and it gets cold. At the same time, it definitely feels like Christmas in this country. Toronto's Distillery District is home to a grand Christmas Market that features a variety of shopping and food options. Many of them are Canadian in nature but there's also a lot of Eastern European inspiration.
