If you're planning a trip to Germany, chances are you're looking at well known cities like Berlin. There's nothing wrong with that. Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich are incredible places to spend time, particularly if you're hitting Munich during Oktoberfest. There's nothing quite like it.

Keeping all of that in mind, there are several other cities across Germany that you should consider. Some of them offer a ton of charm at a much slower place. Others have something special and unique that sets them apart. All you have to do is check them out.

Potsdam

Tucked away in the northeast corner of Germany, not enough people add Potsdam to their itinerary. It's home to several incredible sites, such as Brandenburg Gate, Babelsburg Park, and Sanssouci Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes this such an perfect addition to your German adventure is that it's an easy day trip from Berlin.

Hamburg

This is the busiest cruise port city in the country, yet not enough people spend the time in Hamburg to take in everything it has to offer. Located on an estuary where the Elbe River branches and heads to the North Sea, there is a lot to see from the water. At the same time, the metropolitan area boasts a population of over five million people, meaning there is even more to see and do on land.

Bamberg

Further south into Germany is the small city of Bamberg. It is the very definition of quaint. If you look quaint up in the dictionary, there's a good chance that a photo of Bamberg is beside it. The city, which dates back to the ninth century, is filled with exceptionally maintained architecture. It feels like you've taken a trip back to medieval times.

Regensburg

Southeast from Bamberg is the city of Regensburg, another stunning medieval city. This one is located on the banks of the famed Danube River, though. It's also where the Danube meets the Naab and Regen rivers. While the city is filled with exceptional sights, you have to stop by the city's Old Town. Several of the top landmarks are in this area.

Leipzig

Leipzig is actually quite a sizeable city though it never gets the same attention as some of its better known German counterparts. That's unfortunate because it's home to some incredible restaurants, an exceptional zoo, and several outstanding museums. That includes the Bach Museum which is devoted to the famed composer as well as museums focused on literature, art, and history.
