America does a lot of things really well. They have an outstanding national parks system which is a genuine highlight of any trip there. They know how put on a spectacle, like the Super Bowl, WrestleMania, or a random Tuesday evening in Las Vegas. And they know how to barbecue meat.
No one is saying that there aren't some excellent pit masters in other parts of the world. But you cannot deny that almost every corner of the United States of America is absolutely loaded with incredible barbecue. There are few cities that stand head and pork shoulders above the rest, though.
Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is known world wide as Music City for good reason. Numerous musicians have gotten their start there, particularly in country music but also in a variety of other genres. But Nashville is also known for its great food scene in general, particularly its barbecue. You can get a range of styles, though classic pulled pork with cornbread on the side is definitely a solid bet.
Decatur, Alabama
So, there are apparently 17 cities and towns in the United States named Decatur, which can get a little confusing. In this case, it's the Decatur found in Alabama. You are going to Alabama for vinegar-based sauces and meat that's cooked low and slow. Everyone in town has their own favorite spot, but Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, in the game since 1925, comes up a lot.
Austin, Texas

When it comes to Texas, Austin is kind of an interesting place. It's a college town with large arts and culture scene, as well as one of the best bookstore's in the country. That doesn't mean it's barbecue game isn't on point, though. This city is home to Aaron Franklin who is recognized as one of the top pitmaster's in the US. Franklin Barbecue is a must stop on any Central Texas smoked meat pilgrimage.
Raleigh, North Carolina
The capital of North Carolina, Raleigh has an estimated metropolitan population of well over 1.5 million people. It's a big city and with that comes big expectations for its barbecue. In that regard, Raleigh does not disappoint. A lot of people consider Lexington to be the barbecue capital of North Carolina. That doesn't mean there aren't a ridiculous number of great options in and around Raleigh.
Chicago, Illinois

When anyone thinks about American barbecue, their minds always head to the south and for good reason. You could basically spin in for 30 seconds, throw a baseball in a random direction, and hit an excellent barbecue joint down there.
