Fodor's annual No List tells you where not to go in 2025
For many cities and countries, tourism is a huge part of the economy. Drawing in visitors from around the world to experience what makes their home great brings money into that same home. That doesn't mean everyone is happy about it. Tourists can be rude and disrespectful of locals, and contribute heavily to a variety of societal, environmental, and economic issues such as the rising cost of living. As such, there are more than a few places potential tourists might want to avoid.
Every year, Fodor's Travel puts out the No List which highlights incredibly popular destinations that are crumbling under the weight of over-tourism. The 2025 list includes hot spots like Bali, Barcelona, and even Mount Everest. To be clear, no one is saying these places aren't amazing. The problem is that the extreme number of tourists cause high amounts of damage to the environment as well as pushing local resources to their breaking points.
Some locations like Venice and Amsterdam have started implementing heavy restrictions on tourism numbers, particularly cruise ships which cause rapid influxes of short-term visitors. It should be mentioned that none of the places on the list are looking to fully divest from the tourism marketplace. That would have huge implications on their respective economies. But it is becoming increasingly difficult and irresponsible to ignore the impact of over-tourism on locals.
If you're looking for alternative travel ideas. check out Fodor's Go List for 2025. As you probably guessed from context, these are the locations they would like to see you hit up in the coming year. Each of the 25 locations is incredible in its own way, many of which haven't been overrun by tourists, yet. As odd as this sounds, it includes Las Vegas, Nevada but there might be no place on Earth more welcoming to out-of-towners and tourists.
