Five Indonesian spots that aren't Bali you should check out

No one will argue that Bali is incredible but there is so much more to Indonesia.

Despite appearing on Fodor's No List for 2025, it's quite likely that Bali will remain a popular travel destination for visitors from around the world. This Indonesian island province is home to some of the top tourist destinations around. But it's also not the only place in Indonesia to visit.

This is a country spread across multiple islands north of Australia. There is natural beauty, stunning beaches, and incredible culture to explore throughout the country. Go to Bali, just don't forget about all of the other experiences and places Indonesia has to offer.

Jakarta

This is the capital city of Indonesia which is situated on the most populous island in the world, Java. Including it's multiple satellite cities, Jakarta's urban population is estimated to be over 35 million. Yes, it's a massive city but there is so much to see and do here. There are seemingly endless museums, art galleries, theme parks, landmarks, aquariums, and more.

Batam

So, Batam has over one million people in its urban area, which is pretty big. Compared to Jakarta, it might as well be a one horse town in the Wild West. You still get everything you want in a major center but without the scale of a mega city. In Batam, you'll find more opportunities to get out and see a more natural side of Indonesia thanks to nearby nature reserves and beaches.

Surabaya

Saying a city with an urban population near 10 million feels small seems insane, which Surabaya is compared Jakarta. This is still a massive urban center with lots to explore. Shopping is a big thing to do here, so feel free to take a wander in some of Surabaya's more impressive malls and shopping districts. That doesn't just mean hitting up American stores in Indonesia, either.

Palembang

Another "smaller" city, Palembang has been said to have a bit of a Venice vibe to it. That's because of the Musi River which has numerous tributaries running through the city which feel similar to Venice's canals. Palembang has been a key center for trade for centuries, meaning there are diverse cultural influences here. You'll definitely find that in the architecture and the historical landmarks.

Bandung

Going to Bandung can be a different experience from the rest of the country. It's referred to as a smart city due to its use to technology to improve various functions and operations. There's a reason why it's considered by many to be Indonesia's technology center. At the same time, there is a strong connection to art, culture, and nature here, which are some of the reasons why so many tourists visit.
