If you're planning on a big trip to Fiji, you might want to be careful. Really careful.

Given the sheer amount of the news cycle dominated by other shenanigans, the Dengue Fever outbreak on the island nation of Fiji has gone largely uncovered. As of April 3, 2025, there were roughly 800 cases diagnosed in the previous two weeks. Keep in mind that Dengue Fever is a regular occurrence in Fiji but the average caseload is usually 300 per month. The current outbreak represents a drastic increase in those numbers.

Dengue is a flu-like virus that is spread by mosquitos. While there are vaccines that cover the four different Dengue varieties, they are not approved for use in all countries. As an example, one of the vaccines is approved to be administered in the United States but none of them are in Canada. As such, the current recommendation is that you avoid being bitten an infected mosquito. That seems like it would be difficult as absolute best.

While the priority is the health and well-being of the islands' residents, this is also an issue for their tourism industry. Fiji is an incredibly popular destination and their tourism season is about to kick into high gear. The islands saw a huge increase in visitors in 2024 that pushed it even closer to that magical one million mark. Unfortunately, Fiji is also already suffering from issues related to overtourism. More people combined with a Dengue Fever outbreak is not a good scene for anyone.

The Republic of Fiji is an island nation in Melanesia which is part of Oceania. Considered by many visitors to be the definition of an island paradise, the country is known best for its stunning natural beauty. Perfect beaches and vibrant coral reefs play a huge part in that. Rather that one island, it's an archipelago of well over three hundred islands which offers a range of activities and experiences.
