Out in the Aegean Sea amongst the islands off the coast of mainland Greece is Mykonos, a name synonymous with luxury experiences for visitors from all four corners of the world. While the island is only home to roughly 10,000 people, it still attracts an estimated 1.5 million tourists per year, the vast majority of whom arrive of cruise ships.
But you don't have to be part of the thousands of people getting on and off massive city-like boats every day on Mykonos. In fact, planning a real trip there is the only way to truly enjoy everything this stunning island paradise has to offer. This is your chance to experience Mykonos as a traveler and not as a tourist.
Beaches, beaches, and more beaches

It's not rocket science, people. This is a beautiful island that sometimes feels like it's overflowing with incredible beaches. Don't overthink things. Just find a spot on a beach and enjoy the day. At the same time, some of the beaches on Mykonos are overrun by tourists, particularly when there are cruise ships around. There are a few great, quiet beaches that locals recommend.
Enjoy the nightlife
If Mykonos is famous for one thing, it's the nightlife, most of which can be found in Mykonos Town. When planning a trip to Mykonos, you have to keep this in mind, particularly if you don't intend on taking advantage of said nightlife. Still, it's worth thinking about. There are some wonderful places to enjoy your evening that range from quiet to outrageous. Regardless, behave yourself.
Take a day trip to Delos Island

Day trips to Delos Island are about as touristy as it gets when you're on Mykonos. Visitors arriving by cruise ships often take excursions to the island. Still, it is an incredibly important place in both the mythology and history of Greece. Some of the most extensive archaeological digs in the Mediterranean are being conducted there. You can't stay on the island overnight but it is worth more than one trip to put in some serious time at this exceptional UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Avoid tourist traps (and there are a lot of them)
When people complain about Mykonos, the usual comments are that it's expensive and full of tourists. And both complaints can be accurate. That doesn't mean your trip has to be defined by them, of course. There are plenty of affordable options on the island for food, drink, and accommodations. Do some research, make smart choices, and keep clear of the major tourist spots if you're concerned.
Listen to the locals

Mykonos is just like any other destination in that you have to watch yourself and your personal belongings. At the same time, the vast majority of the resident population of Mykonos are kind and generous people. If they tell you to go to an out of the way spot for dinner, listen to them. And if they warn you that a nightclub is a little sketchy, heed those words.
