Content creators can be incredibly frustrating people at times. Not all of them are like this, of course, but there's all too often an air of self-importance around them. They could be bloggers, TikTok creators, or Yelp reviewers, if that's still a thing. Some of them have a weird sense of entitlement because they're popular on Instagram. All of us have been on a trip and been annoyed by a content creator in some fashion, though Egypt might have gone too far in dealing with one.
Ben Schlappig is a travel blogger who founded and writes for One Mile at a Time, a travel site covering a variety of topics related to the industry. He has been blogging for almost two decades, and seems like a decent enough person from his work. A recent trip to Egypt was a source of content for OMAAT. Being that there is so much to see and do there, that makes sense.
One thing Ben wasn't happy with was the Cairo Airport, so he wrote a post about how much he hates it. While the airport certainly has its issues, the post was incredibly negative and came across as a little condescending at times. The Egyptian Government took issue with it, releasing a response that slammed Schlappig and included video of him seeming to enjoy his experience at the Cairo Airport. It was a little much from both sides, to be honest.
In a follow up post, Schlappig says he won't be setting foot in Egypt until there is meaningful dialogue. That's probably for the best since the whole thing has seemingly become a major issue in the country. Yes, the Cairo Airport definitely needs some work. At the same time, Schlappig's post dug into cultural differences and talked about some issues airport staff simply cannot control. Egypt's government may have overreacted but taking offence to Schlappig's post isn't surprising.
