Chilly week ahead in the Florida Keys and it’s no joke
By Brian Miller
The Florida Keys is a beautiful spot but this week it’s not tropical.
If you are traveling to the Florida Keys this week you may want to bring a jacket and a pair of long pants because this week, it’s cold.
There is cold and there is Florida cold. Most of the time, that cold will seem like a 50 degree difference, but today, it’s minimal. As I sit here in Bahia Honda State Park, RV parked up against the water, the temperature has dipped into the mid to low 60s.
In Marathon, a seven mile trip across “the bridge”, I had to stop at a K-Mart to buy warm clothes. I have been in the Florida Keys at least once a year for the last 6 years. This is the first time that the chilly wind off the water has derailed my plans of a warm trip south.
As I listen to the traffic fly by on the U.S. 1, and my drunk brothers cat call me out for writing on a laptop with a pink cover, I can’t help feel like I am really sitting at home in North Carolina in the middle of December. Then I realize two things. One, it’s early December and I’m in the Florida Keys and it’s actually in the 30’s back home.

Bahia Honda state park is beautiful. On one side, the Atlantic Ocean and the other the waters that become the Gulf of Mexico. The RV sites are spacious and my brother 24 foot “Hobbit-Mobile”, o.k. Jayco Redhhawk fit in the slot with enough room for my own 32 foot Winnebago and my in-laws 29 footter. O.k. I may be exaggerating a little bit, about the Hobbit Mobile (he is short, like 5’4″ short and so is his family). It’s an endearing term.
The rest of this week from Key Largo to Key West will stay in the mid-60’s to mid-70s before it hits 78 degrees on Saturday. If you are traveling to the Keys, bring some warm attire because you will need it.
That being said, I’m not sure anyone really worries about how warm or cold it gets. It is afterall the Florida Keys and that is enough to make the trip wonderful. Even with a few of your siblings who are enjoying the getaway just a little bit too much!
