When it comes to major cities in France, it's difficult to ignore Marseille. It was founded in 600 BC by Greek settlers, so it has history. It's the third largest city in the country at nearly two million people, so it has that urban vibe. And it's right on the Mediterranean, so it's got the weather and the lifestyle.
It's no surprise that around four million people visit Marseille every year to take in the sights, enjoy the culinary experience that comes with being in Provence, and relax on the beaches. Still, there are definitely a few things you should make sure you do in Marseille.
Wander the Old Port of Marseille

The city of Marseille began it's life as a Phoacean settlement many centuries ago. As such, the port was a huge part of its evolution. While there are more ports in the modern city, the Old Port is the original. It remains the heart of the city and a focal point for tourists in Marseille. Many tours leave from here, but do not underestimate the history and beauty of the port itself.
Go museum hopping
Not to put too blunt a a point on it but Marseille has an almost ridiculous number of museums. There are apparently 30 museums across the city, ranging from art to history to pop culture. The Natural History Museum, the Modern Art Museum, and the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology are all good bets. If you're a diver, the Underwater Museum of Marseille is an amazing experience.
Pick a beach and crash out for the day

There is no shortage of amazing beaches in and around Marseille, particularly south of the Old Port. If you're willing to do a bit of additional traveling, there are even more just outside the city not to mention on the shores of the nearby islands. This is one of the huge benefits of going to a large French city on the Mediterranean. Beautiful weather, great beaches. Keep it simple.
Enjoy a night at the opera
The opera isn't for everyone. And most people probably won't seek an opera performance out as part of their dream French vacation. But in this case, they probably should. The Opera Marseille has been in operation in one form or another since 1685. Many well-known contemporary performers made their French debut in Marseille, including the legendary Placido Domingo.
Go on a gastronomic adventure

Saying you should go to a French city for the food is like saying you should go snorkeling for the fish. It's obvious and the main reason why you do it. Still, you have to take time to go on a true gastronomic adventure that combines classic French cuisine with the tastes of the Mediterranean and a seemingly endless supply of fresh seafood. Again, one of the benefits of being right on the Mediterranean.
