Tips for travelers during hurricane season
Jamaica is a beautiful tourist destination, with hordes of travelers going to the island each year. Unfortunately, Jamaica can also be in the direct line of hurricanes that can cause massive destruction for the people living there and the people visiting. That is the fear as Hurricane Beryl begins to make landfall in the Caribbean.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on July 1, first hitting Carriacou, the island portion of Grenada. So far, the hurricane has caused damage and a reported seven deaths. There is concern that this storm is an indication of what is to come, as it is a strong storm early in the season.
“Hurricane Beryl has become the first June category four Atlantic hurricane in history,” posted Colin McCarthy, extreme weather scientist. “We have never seen such a strong hurricane this early in the season.”
If you’re planning to travel to the Caribbean, here are some tips to take into account during this season and the more to come.
First, track the path of the hurricane. Many weather services document the trajectory of the hurricane, noting which cities and lands are expected to get hit. Use that information to plan for your trip and be prepared to change plans as necessary. If the area you’re going to is in the path, it is best to avoid traveling at all costs because the damage to come is often hard to predict.
Second, know your cancellation options in advance. Pay attention when booking or purchasing your travel and accommodations to make sure that cancellation is an option. Doing so can go a long way in keeping you from losing all your investment if a major weather storm hampers your traveling. Flights are usually the hardest to predict, as those cancellations can hit at the last minute. So make the call early on whether you’re going to make an adjustment and change your plans.
Extreme weather is becoming more constant around the world. Travelers of all experience levels should pay attention to what is going on because those storms and other weather systems can quickly impact travel. Following these tips can help avoid the issues that may pop up as yet another hurricane season approaches.
