3 US cities to celebrate Pride Month
LGBT Pride Month, also known simply as Pride Month, is back again starting June 1. It’s a month meant to celebrate the presence of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and he work they’ve done to push for equal rights in several areas of American society. Celebrations happen all around the United States, with some areas unfortunately being more welcome than others. Looking at the calendar, here are three places worth a visit in 2024 if you’d like to join in the celebration this month.
Chicago
Chicago hosts the annual Chicago Pride Parade with the 53rd edition set for June 30. Each parade has a theme, with this year’s theme being Pride is Power in the face of mounting political assaults on the presence of LGBTQ+ people in the country. The parade begins in Uptown and ends in Lincoln Park. Estimates are that more than one million people will be in attendance.
Along with the parade, there will be several other events going on throughout the city. The Pride Fest happens the weekend before the parade, where you’ll find music, vendors, food, drag shows and plenty more. This year’s event features stars like Chaka Khan, Saweetie, and others.
Los Angeles
If you’re heading out to the West Coast, Los Angeles is a city where you can celebrate the entire month. The main pride event is scheduled for June 8 and 9, which includes a music festival and parade. Last year’s event brought out stars like Mariah Carey and Megan Thee Stallion. The 54th Annual LA Pride Parade is on June 9 and that event features the same theme as the one in Chicago, Power in Pride. There’s also a big block party that goes on that weekend on Hollywood Boulevard.
San Francisco
Along with New York City, San Francisco is perhaps the most well-recognized city for Pride celebrations. This year, the San Francisco Pride event will be the last weekend in June, just like NYC so you’ll have to make a decision on where you’d like to be. The theme in SF for 2024 is Beacon of Love. To go along with the parade and celebration event at the San Francisco Civic Center, there’s also the Human Rights Summit and a golf tournament. Along with parties at venues throughout the city, there’s something for everyone the entire month.
