A major part of the Trump Administration's long-term plans is an extensive crackdown on illegal immigrants in the country. This has led to a drastic increase in ICE operations primarily in Latino communities across the country. While there are most certainly critics of the tactics directed at this population, there are additional issues popping up impacting travelers from a variety of countries. That includes American allies such as the UK and Canada.

Recently, a young backpacker from Wales was taken into custody when crossing from Canada to the United States due to what American authorities are calling an incorrect visa. She has since spent weeks in detention. Even more recently, Pakistan's ambassador to Turkmenistan was denied entry to the United States and ultimately deported from the country. The ambassador appeared to have the correct documentation in place and was not provided with a substantial reason for the actions.

The impact is also being felt by Canadian Snowbirds, an affectionate term for retirees who leave the cold winters behind up north to enjoy warmer climates in the south. Despite many of them making this trip for decades and owning property in the US, these Snowbirds are now being required to register with the American government online. Their fingerprints may also be taken. Breaching these rules could result in a stiff fine and/or jail time.

If you are planning to the United States, make sure you check the rules on what documentation you need, which forms need to be filled out, and whether you need a visa or not. Even if you have all of that in place, be prepared for lines to move slowly and for the rules to change quickly. Keep checking to make sure you are in line with American rules to minimize chances of anything going wrong.
