A former textile manufacturing hub, the last century or so has been a mixed bag for Lodz, Poland. World War II saw Nazi occupation followed by the woes of the Cold War. The fall of the Soviet Union left Lodz in a transitional period, one that did not allow for a great reputation with travelers. That started changing in the 2010s as Lodz went through a different period, one of growth and modernization with out the loss of what makes it charming and unique.
Recently, The Independent took a look back at trips and adventures from 2024 that changed the game for various writers. On that list is Lodz, a trip highlighted by beautiful architecture and poignant history throughout the city of nearly 700,000 people. On top of that, upgrades across the city have given it a modern flare that makes it an immensely travelable experience for pretty much anyone.
This isn't the first time Lodz has received a positive callout. It's been a few years, but CNN named it one of the most beautiful places in Poland back in 2018. In addition, it was announced in 2024 that a new high speed rail line would be coming to Lodz that will connect it to other Polish cities, including Warsaw. Advancements like this will allow more people experience the old world charms that are already entrancing visitors each year.
There are no shortage of things to do in Lodz. Manufaktura, a factory turned shopping and lifestyle center, has proven to be a top experience in the city as is Piotkowska Street. which is one of the longest commercial streets on the planet. Additionally, the city's Museum of Modern Art is one of the oldest in the world. Still, the biggest draw here might be architecture scene.
