When it comes to planning a trip to an African country, potential visitors always want to know if it's safe and what there is to do. Every country is completely different in both regards. It's important to do your research to find out if the risk is worth the reward. And there are definitely going to be cases where you want to err on the side of caution.
Zambia certainly has its issues but it is also home to some incredible sights and experiences, particularly in nature as well as the urban areas to an extent. That's why well over two million people visited in Zambia in 2024. At the same time, there are safety and security concerns to keep in mind when planning a trip. Weigh the pros and cons, then decide for yourself.
Safety concerns in Zambia
As a general rule, most government advice indicates that you should exercise a reasonable level of caution when traveling in Zambia. There is always the potential to be pickpocketed in high-tourist areas as well as more aggressive and serious crimes if you're in the wrong neighborhoods at night. This is particularly an issue in the provinces of Lusaka and Copperbelt.

It's important to recognize that Zambia does border countries with much bigger issues, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo. Regions close to these borders can potentially have leftover landmines, so they are likely not the best places to hangout. There is also increased crimes in these same regions, particularly near the DRC border.
Road conditions can degrade rapidly, particularly on secondary roads though main highways are generally in great shape. Drinking and driving is reputedly quite common as is excessive speeding. And pedestrians rarely, if ever, have the right of way. If you're planning on driving, do so defensively and carefully. Be triple careful if you're walking because pedestrians are injured and killed.

Politically, Zambia is mostly stable. Demonstrations do take place, particularly during elections, and can turn violent. Keep your eyes on the news and steer clear. For members of the LGBTQ+ community and women, be extra careful, particularly in rural areas. Zambia is somewhat safer in urban areas for these groups, but harassment and even attacks can still take place.
The wonders of Zambia
Zambia attracts visitors because of its immense natural wonders. It is filled with diverse wildlife, making it a prime spot for safaris. There are numerous national parks and game reserves across the country that are definitive biodiversity hot spots. This is the place to see the big five. Just make sure you go with a legitimate tour company and guide for the best possible and safest experiences.

Victoria Falls is a worldwide renowned destination recognized both for the stunning scenery as well as various adventure activities. That includes the Devil's Pool where swimmers can go right up to the edge of the falls, then look over. If that doesn't seem scary to you, keep in mind that it's about a 350 foot drop from the top of the falls to the water below.
Livingstone is the nice city that tourists often use as base of operations when visiting Victoria Falls and various national parks. It also offers its own experiences, including various museums and art galleries. Just remember that wild animals tend to roam freely through Livingstone, and some of them have exceedingly pointy ends that can do some real damage. Be smart and give them room.

The urban experience isn't the main reason people travel to Zambia, though. If someone wants to go there, it's to experience the vast natural wonders the country has at its disposal. You're going to South Luangwa National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, Blue Lagoon National Park, and more. There are so many parks to choose from, each one of them with various tour options.
The verdict on Zambia
There's no doubt that Zambia has its rough spots. Most of the cities probably aren't places you want to spend a lot of time, particularly the capital where safety can be a concern. You even have to keep your head on a swivel in the national parks. Some of it is common sense, but there is more to staying safe in Zambia than that. Make sure you do you research and plan carefully.
At the same time, the effort is worth it. The natural beauty found in Zambia is incomparable, particularly around wonders like Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River. It is a country teeming with wildlife which gives you seemingly innumerable photo opportunities. While there is certainly some risk in traveling to Zambia, the rewards are incredible.
