Just inside the Welsh border with England is the small town of Hay-on-Wye. It rests on the banks of River Wye, tucked away in a corner of Brecon Beacons National Park. The community dates back to the late 11th century which is certainly reflected in the architecture.
If this sounds like the most idyllic place in the world to sit down and read a book, you'd be right. Hay-on-Wye is often referred to as the world's first book town thanks to the several bookshops in the community. Wales quite literally declared it as its very own National Book Town.

While there are other reasons to visit Hay-on-Wye, such as the history or the natural beauty that surrounds it, the town's claim to fame is books. And if you are passionate about the written word in all of its forms, this might be your dream destination.
Why Hay-on-Wye?
Sometimes just referred to as Hay, this town at its peak had two dozen or more bookstores. Most of them were used with a mix of specialty or genre focused shops. Unfortunately, that number has been slowly creeping down over the years as interests and tastes have changed.
Regardless, any bibliophile looking for a slice of Heaven on Earth will find it in Hay-on-Wye. The community is still dominated by bookstores and people who love reading. That's why their annual festival draws in so many visitors each year.

The Hay Festival of Literature & Arts runs for ten days every year since 1988, from late May to early June. It is a meeting of minds to discuss a myriad of topics. The Hay Festival has become so popular that there are international versions around the world, though the original is still the best.
Planning your trip
Keep in mind that Hay is a small town, so there aren't many hotels in the community. On the upside, other nearby towns and villages also have accommodations in addition a seemingly endless array of bed and breakfast options throughout the countryside. Book early for festival season.
Getting to Hay also requires a bit of planning. Not surprisingly, there isn't an international airport there. It would ruin the vibe. You can rent a vehicle and drive out to Hay yourself, but there are regular busses from larger centers that also work well.

Naturally, you're there for the books and there are a wide range to choose from to suit almost any taste. Hay is also home to a few interesting antique shops, a great spot for vintage vinyl, and a map store. And don't forget you are in a national park. Get outside and enjoy some nature, too.
