When you think of China, it's hard not to immediately connect it to the Great Wall. Sections of it date back to the seventh century BC, making them quite literally thousands of years old. It remains inexorably connected to China's international identity for good reason

That being said, the history of China dates back to an era referred to as prehistory. It is considered one of the cradles of civilization. That's the big way of saying there is a lot more to this country and culture than the Great Wall. You could spend a lifetime exploring China and never scratch the surface.

The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses

This isn't a huge stretch as a suggestion since the Quin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses are one of the greatest archaeological finds in history. But you have to see it for yourself. This museum is non-optional. This 16,000 square feet excavation site contains thousands of terra-cotta warriors and horses in battle formations. Both the scope and level of preservation are impossible to describe.

Nothing about this place seems like it could be possibly real, yet it is. Zhangjiajie is in Hunan Province, the main draws being Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, Wulingyuan Scenic Area, and Tianzi Mountain. Wulingyuan in particular is life-changing experience due to its incomparably unique and stunning scenery.

Mogao Caves

Also known as the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas, the Mogao Caves are located on a key point of the Silk Road. This cultural crossroads is home to a system of 500 Buddhist Temples. There are other such cave temple systems in the local region, but Mogao is possibly the most extensive and culturally significant. There are English languages tours that will guide you through several of the caves.

Big Buddha and Leshan Giant Buddha

Okay, so this is not a convenient road trip between two awe-inspiring Buddha statues. They are nowhere near each other but both absolutely should be experienced. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 233 foot statue carved out of a cliff face in Sichuan while the Big Buddha is a massive bronze statue near Hong Kong. Yes, it will be a lot of time and effort to see both but they are worth it.

Nan Lian Garden

Located in Diamond Hill, Hong Kong, this classical Chinese garden should not be missed. Designed in the style made popular during the Tang dynasty, the Nan Lian Garden contains water features, various wooden structures, and numerous natural accents. The entire point of this place is to leisurely stroll through the garden, taking everything in and finding peace in the moment.
