Without question, Spain is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It doesn't matter if you're on the Mediterranean coast, in the mountains, or in Barcelona. This is an idyllic place, a dream destination for many travelers inspired by endless blogs and photos focused on the country.
Unfortunately, decades of over-tourism has led to a significant amount of pushback on the part of locals and even some levels of the Spanish government. While Spain might want to cut tourism back, that doesn't mean other European countries aren't happy to see you.
Portugal
Spain's neighbor to the west definitely gets it's fair share of visitors with millions of travelers arriving each year. While Portugal certainly has its issues with tourists, there isn't the same level of open hostility travelers might find in parts of Spain. What you will find is an absolutely stunning country filled with a rich culture and heritage to experience.
Romania
Sandwiched between several Eastern European countries and the Black Sea, Romania doesn't tend to get a lot of tourists each year. That's a shame because this region is overflowing with history going back millennia until the modern era. There are numerous architectural wonders to explore not to mention the incredible natural beauty of the country.
Hungary
Right next door to Romania is the land-locked country of Hungary. The difference is that tens of millions of tourists head to Hungary each year. For the most part, locals in the main cities and urban areas are extremely welcoming towards tourists, and there is plenty to do. Museums, wineries, markets, beaches, and historical attractions can be found throughout the country.
Belgium
Right between France and the Netherlands, not to mention right across the English Channel from the United Kingdom, is Belgium. Tourism is on the rise here, seemingly always on the verge of breaking the 10 million visitors per year mark. Being that the country is filled with castles and immaculately laid out gardens, it's not hard to understand why. Belgium feels like a fairytale.
Malta
The Republic of Malta is a small island nation in the Mediterranean off the coast of Sicily on the way to North Africa. Many Italians vacation there for good reason, and other international visitors are figuring out what the big deal is. The residents are generally quite friendly and the food is amazing, not to mention great weather pretty much year round.
