The scale of China can be hard to wrap your mind around. Not only is China one of the biggest countries in the world by population, it is one of the biggest by land mass. On top of that, it's estimated the region was inhabited as early as 2.25 millions years ago.

China is a land of deep rooted history, from a local cultural perspective as well as a world perspective. And it's also home to incredible flora, fauna, and topography. Laojun Mountain National Geopark

Northwest of Lijiang city in the Yunnan Province is the spectacular Laojun Mountain National Geopark. Based on the name, you probably guessed the big draw here are the awe-inspiring geological formations. There's also a cultural component here as Naxi villages are in these mountains, offering a unique opportunity to learn about them.

Xiqiao Mountain National Forest Park

What's interesting about Xiqiao Mountain National Forest Park is that it is national forest park, a national geological park, and a key cultural area. The park contains hundreds of natural springs and waterfalls as well some of the most unique geological formations you will ever see. If you're feeling bold, climb to the summit of Mount Xiqiao to experience the splendor of the massive Guanyin statue.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Okay, this one is a no brainer. It's almost impossible to write anything about traveling to China and not mention the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It looks like something out of an anime because its almost impossible terrain has been the inspiration for so much media. This is an iconic park, to say the least. It is filled with quartz-sandstone pillars which have to be seen.

Yadan National Geological Park

A geological wonder in the middle of a desert, Yadan National Geological Park is a unique and terrifying experience. The yardang landforms are reputed to be the largest and most intricate natural structures of their kind, formed by years of powerful wind-based erosion. That same wind going over the yardangs makes a horrifying noise that some have compared to a devil screaming. Fun!

Guifeng Mountain Forest Park
