When it comes to a relaxing island vacation, it's hard to beat the Maldives. Southwest of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, this archipelagic state is home to some of the most incredible resorts in the world. In fact, many of the islands that make up the Maldives have resorts on them.
Each one offers its own range of experiences from simple to luxurious. Naturally, the cost rises with the extravagance of the experience. There are many that have all-inclusive options while relaxing on an island that only houses the resort you're staying at. But there is another way to go.
Consider the other type of island in the Maldives beyond resorts. These are the local islands where the actual residents of the archipelago live. They may not be home to full-on resorts but local islands offer all the experiences a trip to the Maldives should have as well as a few unique experiences.
Real Maldives life
Resort life is always appealing but it's also removed from the real Maldives. Once you're at your resort island, you have to take public ferries or expensive speedboat taxis to get to other locations. Ultimately, you end up spending most of your time at your resort.
Staying on a local island allows you to see the communities that residents live in. You get to be part of the real Maldives. This can mean better access to local cuisine, unique tours, and other experiences. And thanks to public beaches and local house reefs, you still get to enjoy the ocean.
Many local islands have inexpensive hotels that are clean, quiet, and accommodating. Guest houses are also a great option. In addition to being budget-friendly, they provide an authentic way to enjoy a side of the Maldives the resorts don't.
It is worth noting that staying on local islands does come with drawbacks. Naturally, crime rates are a bit higher than what you would find on resort islands, though that isn't too surprising. Observing the normal rules of safe travel apply. Regardless, the local island experience is worth investigating.
The best local islands
One of the Maldives' most unique local islands is Vaadhoo. A small community, it is a fun and vibrant place to spend time with incredible snorkeling. What sets it apart is the bioluminescent phytoplankton that appear at the shoreline in the evenings from June to October.
If you're looking for amazing snorkeling and diving opportunities, Goidhoo is the island. Its massive reef systems are absolutely teeming with life, not to mention some massive crabs. There is a great selection of hotels and guest houses to choose from just steps away from the beaches.
At the other end of the spectrum is Maafushi, one of the most developed islands in the Maldives. The tourist and resident areas have a wide array of guest houses and hostels. On top of that, there are numerous restaurants and excursions as well as easy access to other islands.
