Campground-free Ohio fishing spots for your next catch

Sometimes you just want to hit a lake where fishing is the focus, especially in the Buckeye State.

You, the water, and your fishing poles. Fishing is one of the best outdoor activities and Ohio's lakes are full of bass, crappie, walleye, catfish, bluegill, trout, and perch ready to catch. Now that spring is here, load up your boat or pack up your lawn chairs and get your line in the water. Here are some places where you can relax without the extra activities offered at most state parks. Just don't forget your permit!

Fox Lake

Located in Waterloo Township, Athens County, the area is untended with 2.6 miles of shoreline.
Use the accessible ramp to launch your boat. Keep in mind that outboard motors have a 10 horsepower limit. If you're looking for peace and quiet, Fox Lake is a great alternative to the more popular Lake Snowden just ten minutes away. Other activities include kayaking and hunting.

Summit Lake

Once connected with the Ohio and Erie Canal, Summit Lake sits in South Akron surrounded by several of the cities' neighborhoods and nearby many shops and restaurants if you want to see more of the city. A family friendly lake, power boats cannot exceed six mph and life jackets are required for all kayaks and canoes. Take the kids into the Summit Lake Nature Center to experience the exhibits and animal displays.

Lake Medina

Thirty minutes outside of Akron is Lake Medina. Known for its scenery, atmosphere, and clean water, expect to see swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. Fishing occurs on the on the south end of the lake, at the entrance of State Route18 off Medina Rd. There are tree trails available that pass the West Branch of the Rocky River. Power boats are restricted and the closest boat launch is at Chippewa Falls Lake with a 399 horsepower limit.

Clark Lake

Clark Lake in South Vienna is eight miles outside of Springfield, Ohio, The parking lot with the boat ramp and only restroom access is off Co Hwy 358. Waters are shallow and have a murky appearance as the lake bottom is made of sand and clay. There's still an opportunity to make a catch as the lake gets stocked with rainbow trout. Many visitors have had success catching bluegill, bass, and crappie.
A 10 horsepower motor restriction is enforced.

Rush Creek Lake

No restrooms. No trails. This lake in Rushville, Ohio has 300 acres of water for you to enjoy. There's one boat ramp located near the parking lot off Thornville Road (County Road 74) entrance, Make a solo trip or take some friends and family, keeping in mind that there are no facilities for the kids.


Knox Lake

In the village of Fredericktown, Ohio, Knox Lake is known as one of the best locations in the state to catch largemouth bass. Fishing is most popular on the end of the lake off Old Mansfield Rd. There are two fishing piers for people without a boat as well as two boat ramps at both the north and south end. There are marinas at each end as well. Bring your headphones to block out the noise. Boat slip rental is available on first come first serve limited basis. To dock a boat, a permit is required and costs $260 for the year.

Oxbow Lake

Eight miles northwest of Defiance, Oxbow Lake in Tiffin Township, Ohio has entrance access off Schick Road. Your boat can have any motor type but you must keep a speed without creating a wake. This location is a good option for your dog, with walking trails and a training field available. Be sure to check out Little Oxbow Lake nearby.
