Apple wants to help you find your lost luggage
Any regular traveler knows it can happen. The plane lands at your destination, then the traveler heads to the luggage carousel. It takes a few minutes for the suitcases to start pouring out and onto the conveyor belt. Eventually, the realization sets in that everything has been picked up and that traveler's luggage hasn't appeared. It dawns on them that their luggage might not have made the same trip they did. It's a bad scene.
Losing your luggage on a trip is a horrible feeling. Hopefully, the airline can figure out what happened and get their luggage to them. If not, they're going shopping. Apple thinks it can help. For a few years now, people have been planting Air Tags in their luggage as a means of keeping track of where their bags are at. It's a smart move, one that can help work out where things went wrong.
Now, Apple is adding a new dimension. Specifically, the tech company is unveiling a new feature that allows the user to share Air Tag information with a third party such as the airline that lost the luggage in the first place. The "Share Item Location" feature will generate a live-updating link that can be shared and used to help track that lost bag. It has the potential to cut down lost luggage concerns by a significant amount. And the more airlines on board, the better the service will work.
"Share Item Location" is in the process of being integrated into customer service at 15 carriers, making the process even easier. It's hard to imagine that even more carriers won't want to get on board with this service as it is as good for them as it is for their customers. The concept has the potential to turn a bad situation around and help get people back on their vacations faster.
