5 reasons that your next trip should be to Santorini, Greece

Greece has never been short on things to do for any traveler. It is filled with amazing cities, not to mention the fact that you can never invest enough time in Athens to see it all. But there is more to Greece than major centers.

Located to the southeast of the Greek mainland in the Agean Sea, the island of Santorini has been inspiring generations of tourists for years. It’s a marvelous place to spend time, and really take a moment to appreciate what life has to offer.

Spending a day or two in Oia

Calling Oia scenic is like calling calling André the Giant tall. It’s a massive understatement to say the least. This could easily be the most beautiful spot on Santorini, if not in the entirety of Greece. And that’s saying a lot.

This is not a place where you go to do things. You go there to simply be there. Swim. Boat. Eat. Wander. Relax. Eat. Seriously, just take an extra long lunch and revel in the joy of life that you can find in Oia.

Relaxing on Perissa Beach

Like much of Greece, Santorini is not short on amazing beaches to enjoy a day or 20 on. Despite that, Perissa Beach still stands out as one of the best on the island, if not the best. There are few better places to enjoy the Agean Sea from.

This stunning black sand beach can get bust during peak seasons but it’s worth the trip. In addition to the gorgeous views and warm sand, Perissa is lined by several outstanding restaurants that feature Mediterranean, Greek, Italian and Indian food.

The prehistoric Greek town of Akrotiri

There are two aspects to this destination. Yes, there’s a wonderful modern village here that is certainly worth exploring. But the archaeological value of this region to Greece cannot be fully stated or appreciated until you’re there.

Specifically, the Minoan Bronze Age Akrotiri archaeological site is the big attraction. Much like Pompey, this original settlement was destroyed by a volcano in the 1500s. The ash preserved the site incredibly, leaving behind unbelievable frescoes and artifacts.

Touring Ancient Thera

Like much of Greece, it’s hard to not stumble across ancient history when wandering Santorini. And Ancient Thera is a wonderful spot to take some of that history, particularly when it’s overlooking the Agean Sea.

This settlement was inhabited from the 9th century BC until the 8th century AD. The ruins here offer a glimpse into life in this region during that era. Plus, artifacts from the site can be found at a museum in the capital city of Fira, which you should also spend a few days in.

Taking a boat tour in Greece

The history of Greece has been defined by the sea on so many levels. As such, it only makes sense that you get out on the water, as well. That can take many forms, of course, but your should definitely consider a boat tour.

Depending on your likes and dislikes, and what you’re looking for from such an adventure, you should be able to find a boat tour to suit you. Whatever form it takes, boat tours from Santorini can not be recommended enough.
