Indonesia is an amazing country that’s spread across more than 17,000 islands. That, in and of itself, is already incredibly impressive to say the least. But there are also a variety of marvelous cities to check out in this island nation.

While cities like Surbaya and the different regions of Jakarta are often on travel bucket lists, there are plenty of interesting cities to experience. And traveling to them will help you spend time on some of the different islands that make this nation up.

Medan, Indonesia

North Sumatra is a large province in Indonesia, and takes up a significant portion of the the island of Sumatra. It’s capital is Medan, one of the largest cities in the country at more than 3.6 million people. And Medan has a lot to show travelers from around the world.

Medan was established in 1590, and has become a key center in the region. The Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni is absolutely stunning as is the Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri Buddhist Temple. Plus, the Rahmat International Wildlife Museum and Gallery is an interesting stop.

Bandung, Indonesia

On the island of Java, visitors will find the city of Bangdung. It was founded in the early 1800s, and has become a prime destination for travelers to Indonesia. There is a lot of Dutch Colonial Architecture in the city, particularly the tropical Art Deco style of the era.

Braga Street is an interesting heritage spot that’s lined with cafes and shops. The NuArt Sculpture Park focuses on the work of Nyoman Nuarta, and offers a unique view into Indonesian art. Plus, the Sari Ater Hot Spring is a wonderful place to relax.

Pekanbaru, Indonesia

Back on Sumatra Island in the province of Riau rests the city of Pekanbaru, Indonesia. While there have been settlements on the location since the 17th century, the city was officially founded in the late 18th century.

Muara Takus is a key historical and cultural site that is nearby, and is a necessity on any trip to Pekanbaru. On the complete other side of the coin is Boombara Waterpark, which is a fun way to cool off after a day of sightseeing.

Tangerang, Indonesia

Located in the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan area, Tangerang is an interesting destination within an interesting destination. While it is a city on its own, it’s also considered to be a suburb of Jakarta, and is one of the biggest suburb in the world.

There are actually a tone of cool malls in the immediate area if you’re interested in the shopping scene. Scientia Square Park is a unique and beautiful stop in the city, as is Koja Cliff Park. The privately run Museum Benteng Heritage is also a great palce to check out.

Palembang, Indonesia

Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra, and another great stop on your tour of Indonesia. While every city on this list boasts its own personality, Palembang might be one of the most standout communities in the country.
