Ogunquit, Maine: A picturesque seaside community south of Portland
By Brian Miller
Sometimes, the perfect picture of a seaside town will come to life and that is exactly what happens when you visit Ogunquit, Maine.
Traveling north on I-95 into Maine, Ogunquit is an easy town to miss on your way into Maine from New Hampshire. You cross over the river from Portsmouth and into Kittery, Maine and when I-95 turns to a more northwestern route in York, your focus tends to shift towards Portland.
What you need to do is take U.S route 1 from York and head north. You will pass Nubble Lighthouse and the York Cliffs as well as Bald Head light but then you hit Ogunquit. 44 miles to the south of Portland.
Here you will find a beach to stroll along. This small fishing community stands out as a postcard from another time. Touched by civilization but quaint and humble.
Perkins Cove offers a breathtaking vista of the Atlantic Ocean as it slaps against the rocks and shoots up the crevices along the shore. Dine at restaurants along the shore and visit the shops. Some of the best Lobster Rolls on Earth can be found here.
The Marginal Way foot trail will take you along the water’s edge with more sweeping vistas. Ogunquit Beach offers shallow pools at high tide which is great for young children and miles of sandy shoreline when the tide is out.
Ogunquit is becoming a relaxing tourist town but without the loss of its identity making it one of the brilliant stops along the Maine coastal towns. It is here, in these coastal communities that you find yourself lost in the beauty of what Maine offers along its shores, and then when you have made the trek north and are ready to head back south, head inland and experience the lush forests of pine that will fill your senses with a smell of Christmas.
