Traveling to Costa Rica is a dream come true for many people. It’s natural beauty cannot be be underestimated, and is the main reason people travel there. But if you’re spending time in San Jose, there are a lot of amazing restaurants to be experienced.

Not enough people talk about how much of a food town San Jose has become over the years. There are several interesting options to choose from, many of which are representative of the culture and history of this stunning region.

Gallo Rojo

Translated as the Red Rooster, Gallo Rojo describes itself as urban gastronomy that derives inspiration from around the world. Their menu is constantly evolving, with dishes influenced by food trends from Europe, Asia and beyond.

Those range of inspirations are immediately apparent on even the appetizer menu. It features a Classic Peruvian Ceviche alongside Nikkei Tuna, Chicken Satay Skewers and Cheese Dice. This is only amplified in the main courses where you’ll find dishes from Vietnam, Hong Kong and more.

Cocina Ecléctica

If you want to be fed in San Jose like you’re family, then Cocina Ecléctica is the spot for you. It is in the home of the chef and proprietor, and her reputation among locals and visitors could be described as beloved.

The space is decorated in her own unique artwork, which is where the eclectic feel comes from. Just to make it interesting, the owner will ask what you do and don’t like in food, then make you something unique and delicious. This restaurant is an experience.

Bacchus Ristorante

You might not be in San Jose looking for great Italian food but you will find it at Bacchus Ristorante. The restaurant is situated in an incredible heritage house, the walls lined with outstanding art. That alone is worth the visit. But you are there to eat.

The food is prepared using true Mediterranean ingredients in a legit wood oven. Bacchus has a variety of menus, each one offering something special. While there a lot of amazing options, the gnocchi, the traditional lasagna and any pizza out of that oven are a treat.

San Jose’s La Criollita

For anyone looking for a taste of San Jose, La Criollita is the spot. The simple, unassuming atmosphere and generally excellent service make it the perfect place to sit down and just enjoy truly great comfort food.

Everything is delicious but they serve some incredible seafood alongside some refreshing salads and other sides. What you’ll find at La Criollita are some big plates filled with entrancing Costa Rican dishes that every trip needs.

If you’ve ever wondered what Peruvian fusion tastes like, then San Jose’s La Divina Comida is what you’re looking for. It’s generally regarded as one of the top restaurants in the city, if not the entire country, and for good reason.
