Record breaking cold weather to hault travel across mid-U.S. and Texas
By Brian Miller
If you are traveling to the great state of Texas, you may want to postpone if you can. According to reports, the Texas governor has issued a disaster declaration for every county in the state as a major winter weather storm bears down.
Temperatures are plummeting to record lows across the state with places like San Antonio set to dip to 16 degrees on Monday. Already, wind chills from the cold front have been recorded at -32 degrees. Freezing rain is expected across the South-central region until noon on Monday.
Temperatures will continue to fall as far as Dallas and in Houston along the coast. The extreme weather will also affect Arkansas as well. The National Weather Service has issued travel advisories for the region and are asking for motorists to stay off the road if at all possible.
Texas isn’t a state that is prepared for these types of weather problems. Most homes are not insulated to deal with low temperatures. The state government and the power companies are concerned with power outages and not being able to keep up with the heating demands across the state.
In addition to the cold and the ice, snow is also expected across the state. The winter storm will bring record temperatures all the way from Minnesota and Wisconsin where -33 degrees in northern Wisconsin are expected. On the East coast, temperatures on Monday will range from 53 degrees in Jacksonville to 3 degrees in upper Maine. The mid-Atlantic coastal regions will see temperatures in the low to mid-30s.
It is not going to get better over the week ahead. Temperature predictions in Atlanta and northward the Carolina’s will see dips to the low to mid-20s as late as Wednesday.
