On this date in 1778, Hawaii was discovered by a British explorer. The island chain is now simply referred to as “paradise” and a major U.S. travel destination.

Captain James Cook was an explorer and Naval Captain for the British and during one of his trips, he discovered what we now refer to as “paradise” and indeed it is.

Cook named the islands the “Sandwich Islands” after First Lord of the Admiralty, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Cook would discover the islands by chance during his third trip into the Pacific and he would later be killed on the island when he tried to arrest the “King” after a dispute.

The island change in the Pacific Ocean has been a major part of the United States serving as a forward military base and of course home of the Pacific Naval Fleet.

Travelers make Hawaii one of the most visited states in the Union. From beaches and warm water to some of the best snorkeling in America, Hawaii has always held something for everyone. Falls and rivers of lava still continue to shape the island.

The islands are comprised of eight islands including the “Big Island” of Hawai’i and the smaller Maui, Kaua’i, and O’ahu which are all top destinations for tourists. The other islands, Kaho’olawe, Lana’i, Moloka’i, and Ni’ihau finish the chain.

The islands boast ten plus state-recognized parks as well as three National Parks.

Hawaii offers returning guests and newcomers a lot of cultural experiences including regional and traditional foods, nature that remains almost pristine and untouched on some islands, outdoor adventures from the ocean’s edge to the mountainous hiking opportunities. Of course, there is also shopping and Hawaii is one of the best destinations for families as both adults and children will enjoy the world unlike any other in the United States.
