Favorite Spots Along Court Street, Brooklyn

Sandwiched between the countless beautiful brown stones in Brooklyn are some authentic treats. From restaurants to little groceries there is more than enough to earn an afternoon wander. This week- along Court Street! Hop off the 4/5 or the 2/3 at Borough Hall and make your way south along Court Street.

The first of my picks, Sahadi’s, is home to the best Hummus in New York City. This great little grocery’s packed with nuts, olives, cheese, and every other wonderful Mediterranean yummy you could wish for. As you walk in the door pull a number and load up on nuts, olives, and other sweet treats by the bulk. Then head back to their cheese counter for some heavenly feta.

It may not be as cheap as the Trader Joe’s (located across the street) but the prices are reasonable and the lines shorter! Do not even think about leaving without some hummus and tabbouleh, made fresh in the kitchen behind the counter.   No matter your tastes you’ll find some gorgeous items to get you though the week and some great hostess gifts. Turkish Delight, anyone?

Maeander down Court Street into Cobble Hill and you will find many a sweet spot, but don’t stop until you get to Caputo’s Bake Shop. Insanely affordable and so delicious you’ll most likely walk out with an arm full. A very old school bakery complete with the ovens in the back and the thick Brooklyn accents out front! My favorites include the Kalamata Olive bread, the Ciabatta, and the excellent Pizza dough. The lard bread is also a rave!

Book Court, a local, independent book store is the stop for the “non- foodie.” It’s a beautiful, friendly store with great titles and a stupidly friendly staff. A great mix of best sellers, local Brooklyn themed books, an excellent kid section and enough new book smells to make any book lover pass out. In the world on e-books and chain book stores, it a feat to keep an independent book store open. Go on put your money where your mouth is and shop local!
